Overnight visitor in Class 2/3

Last Friday, we came in to the classroom to find complete chaos.  There was food on the table, bean bags covering the floor and something that looked like a bed in the quiet corner.  On further investigation we found a letter from the Clyde the Commonwealth mascot!

 

He left us some tasks to do which included making up a fact file of one of the Commonwealth countries and planning an assembly for our parents.  Thankfully, we had lots of ideas and worked hard on each of the jobs.

 

We hope the grown up will enjoy seeing our work in a few weeks time.

We have been learning how to put a comment on our blog page.  We all wrote interesting pieces which we then published for everyone to see.

 

Sharing the Message

Last week a few of us went down to the nursery/pre-school to tell them about the Pick Up 3 Pieces campaign.  We talked about what we have been doing and why it is important to collect litter.

 

The Early Settlers in Orkney

We had a busy and interesting day last week visiting historical sites from five thousand years ago. 

First we went to Maeshowe in Stenness.  It was fun crawling along the short tunnel to get in to the chambered tomb.  Everyone listened carefully to the custodian and asked questions about the people who may have used the site.  We also looked at the Maeshowe dragon 'drawn' on the wall.

 

 

 Then we travelled to Skara Brae.  Here we looked at the displays and went into the replica house. 

We spent time thinking about how the people might have felt in their homes.  We all agreed it would have been dark and smoky.

 

Then we walked along to the village.  It was very interesting listening to the custodian tell us how the land would have been shaped very different.  We were all keen to share our knowledge about the different furniture in the houses.

 

 After our lunch we went down on to the beach.  

Some of us built models of the houses and the Ring of Brodgar.

 



Finally, we went to the Ring of Brodgar. We played a game counting the number of stones and decided if statements, we were told, were true or false.   

 

 

We returned to school tired but having learned lots!

Investigating the Early Settlers

We have had a busy week learning about the Stone Age.  On Monday we went to the museum and looked at all of the evidence.  We recorded what we found out in pictures and notes.  Then on Friday one of the rangers from Historic Scotland came and showed us lots of different replica artefacts. 

It was very interesting learning about life in Orkney 5000 years ago!

 

First few weeks of term four

This term our topic is called 'Early Settlers'.  We are very fortunate to have so many historical sites in our local community we can visit.  To help us think about the past we have been making our own timelines and examining different historical artefacts.

 

 

 We have also been doing some work on fractions.  We have played some games to help us think about how to make halves and quarters.

 

Easter time

Our first week back after the holidays was spent getting ready for Easter.  We read the Bible story and talked about how we celebrate the Christian festival.  Then we had some fun making cards and decorating eggs with Mrs Reid.
